Such gongs are pivotal in Iban cultural practices, where their harmonious sounds play a crucial role in invoking spiritual energies and creating an distinctive ambiance.
Documented images of the Iban people using similar gongs can be found in the renowned publication “Vanishing World” (pp. 130-131), providing a glimpse into the rich cultural heritage and musical traditions of this indigenous community.
Collected in the 1970s by a Swiss traveler from Basel, this gong is not only in excellent condition but also holds a unique feature - it still retains its original chain used for hanging.
