According to the local legend, Putri Nyale was a beautiful princess who sacrificed herself to the sea to save her kingdom from disaster. Every year during the traditional Sasak festival of Bau Nyale, thousands of sea worms, known as nyale, emerge from the ocean, and it is believed that these are the princess's manifestation.
