Timor Island. Boti Kingdom
Homespun cotton, natural dyes
215 × 88 cm
Inv. T.14.009

This is a beautiful example of traditional cloth from the remote kingdom of Boti, in South Central Timor. It depicts the “classical” pattern of the local ceremonial blankets. The weave is thick.

The textiles of Boti maintain the highest standards of traditional weaving, employing homespun cotton thread and natural dyes. The whole process of planting, spinning, tying and dyeing is available in the community.

This kind of Botinese selimut is rare. The density of colours and the refinement of patterns hints at the work of a master weaver.
