Inv. BA.11.002

Wood panel representing the giant Boma, apotropaic demon and king of the forest whose function is to keep away the evil spirits living on earth (butha kala).

His representations are found at the entrance of temples and of the rooms of Balinese homes, on the back of cremation towers and of some altars. Boma is considered very strong; he is able to overcome the physical and spiritual obstacles of the earthly world, as he is the son of god Wisnu and of the earth goddess Pratiwi.

This is an exceptional relief, originating in the aristocratic context, which constitutes in its quality the greatest expression of the lively, elegant and elaborate Balinese sculptural convention.
