Inv. BA.14.007

Mask representing a spiritual force in the likeness of a tiger, icon of the god Brahma, to whom is entrusted the protection of the village from calamities and from the spirits of the deceased.

This work was probably used in performances of wayang wong, a Balinese dance-drama derived from the ancient court dance gambuh, which draws its contents from the Ramayana.

Characterised by large protruding eyes and by the open mouth showing long fangs, this mask is a magnificent example, marked off by the essential treatment of the face, whose expressive force causes it to irrupt forcefully in space.

Formally, the mask is typical of the production previous to the half of the twentieth century.
