Gong used in ceremonial contexts and during feasts in Iban clan houses.

This is a classical kind of gong from Borneo, characterised by a central hump and a deep edge. Two significant images documenting the use of gongs by the Iban are published in Vanishing World (pp. 130-131).

This gong, collected in the nineteen-seventies in an Iban clan house, is in excellent state and it is also unique for being still endowed with chain used to hang it, in many cases this has been removed or substituted by rope.
